“Hogs” History

“Hogs for the Cause” is a two day benefit that originated in New Orleans in 2009. That first year roughly 200 folks showed up in City Park to watch a pig turn slowly on a spit and raise money for the family of Ben Sarrat, a young boy with an incurable form of brain cancer. The idea was, and still is, to aid the families of these children who have been afflicted with such a terrible disease. Often times, when confronted with such a terrible diagnosis, the family is hit financially as well. The “Hogs for the Cause” 501c (3)  charity foundation assists families with cash grants that help pay the rent, utilities and every day expenses. In 2017, just a few years after that first fundraiser for Lil’ Ben, this event has grown to become one of the largest barbecue competitions and music festivals in the country with over 25,000 in attendance and a total of over $1,300,000 raised in donations this year alone. The cause remains the same: helping families fighting pediatric brain cancer.

Fast forward to 2014 where our General Manager, Bill Wood met members of one of the teams that compete in the annual event while visiting New Orleans. The team, “Silence of Da Hams,” is comprised of several chefs from New Orleans. Bill and crew stayed in touch and decided to bring the event to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in 2016. Our inaugural Hogs For The Cause weekend debuted last July and we’re excited to bring back the event this year, Friday, August 25th and Saturday, August 26th for a full weekend of great tunes, good fun and tasty NOLA food all for this worthy cause!

 

Day One: Friday, August 25th, 2017

“Hogs For The Cause” Gala

Friday evening at 6:30PM kicks off the Hogs For The Cause Weekend with our special “Hogs For The Cause Gala” in our Steak and Lobster House. The Silence of Da Ham crew take over our Steakhouse with each preparing a specialty course of their own and paired with wines from Miner Family Winery. The talented crew will be:

  • Michael Brewer: Executive Chef at Morton’s Steak House in New Orleans
  • Tory McPhail: Executive Chef at Commander’s Palace in New Orleans
  • Chris Montero: Executive Chef at the Napoleon House in New Orleans
  • Jared Ralls: Executive Chef and Partner of La Boca, and Partner of Primitivo, both in New Orleans

Prizes will also be raffled off during the multi-course dinner. Tickets to the event are $125 per person (ages 21 and over only please) with all proceeds benefiting the Hogs For The Cause Foundation.

Following Friday evening’s dinner, we will be featuring a ticketed show in our Crown Room featuring Muddy Magnolias, a soulful folk-rock duo out of Nashville, TN comprised of Kallie North and Jessy Wilson. Opening will be one-man-band “swamp-Yankee rock” sounds of The Suitcase Junket! Plus after party in the Red Room with blues guitarist Nick Schneblelen (of Trampled Under Foot).

Day Two: Saturday, August 26th, 2017

“Hogs For The Cause” Courtyard Barbecue

Day two of our Hogs festivities brings us outside to our backyard or courtyard rather where our Silence of Da Hams crew continues their culinary creations. Our chefs will have spent the entire night preparing several different smoked offerings along with some inventive seafood options. One menu highlight will be Cochon de Lait, a NOLA favorite. Cochon de Lait is one of Acadiana’s most famous and delectable dishes – marinated, pit roasted young suckling pig thin sliced and served on a po-boy. A staple at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, this dish is not to be missed! In addition to the good eats there will be adult beverages (and beverages for the kiddos), live music featuring blues guitarist Nick Schneblelen and a silent auction featuring items generously donated from local businesses. Admission is free, all ages are welcome and proceeds from the food & drink sales and silent auction all benefit the Hogs For The Cause Foundation.

Following Saturday’s outdoor feasting, we will be capping off our Hogs For The Cause weekend with a ticketed show in our Crown Room featuring a double bill of bands that are always a favorite with the Tahoe crowds! Experimental rock jams from New Monsoon and Afro-disco-funk-soul-Latin blends from Afrolicious will keep you dancing all night long! Plus progressive soul & funk from Object Heavy will keep the party vibes flowing with their after party in the Red Room!
