“Hogs” History

“Hogs for the Cause” is a two-day benefit that originated in New Orleans in 2009. That first year roughly 200 folks showed up in City Park to watch a pig turn slowly on a spit and raise money for the family of Ben Sarrat, a young boy with an incurable form of brain cancer. The idea was, and still is, to aid the families of these children who have been afflicted with such a terrible disease. Often times, when confronted with such a terrible diagnosis, the family is hit financially as well. The “Hogs for the Cause” 501c (3) charity foundation assists families with cash grants that help pay the rent, utilities and every day expenses. Fast-forward a few short years (nine to be exact and Hogs for the Cause is now one of the largest barbecue competitions and music festivals in the country. Their charitable purpose remains the same: helping families fighting pediatric brain cancer. This past March the New Orleans event drew 80+ teams competing in various barbecue competitions, over 30,000 supporters and raised 1.3 million dollars. 100% of the funds raised are returned as grants to the families in need of financial assistance during their struggle. In 2017, Hogs for the Cause West was able to assist two Northern Nevada families through the Renown pediatric oncology department.

 

Flashback to 2014 where our General Manager, Bill Wood met members of one of the teams that compete in the annual event while visiting New Orleans. The team, “Silence of Da Hams,” is comprised of several chefs from New Orleans (and won first place in the “Whole Hog” competition this year!). Bill and crew stayed in touch and decided to bring the event to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in 2016. Our inaugural Hogs For The Cause weekend debuted in July of 2016 and we’re excited to bring back the event for its third year, Thursday, September 13th, Friday, September 14th, and Saturday, September 15th for a full weekend of great tunes, good fun and tasty NOLA food all for this worthy cause!

Galactic Brings the New Orleans Funk to the Crown Room!

 


Always a Tahoe favorite, Galactic featuring Erica Falls kicks off the 3-Day event by filling the Crown Room with NOLA funk and soul to get you in to the Hogs Groove!

 

Plus Reno’s own Mojo Green brings their “Funkajamadelic” sounds to the Red Room for the after party!

Day Two: Friday, September 14th, 2018

Silence of Da Hams take over the Steakhouse!

 

Friday evening at 6:30PM our Hogs for the Cause Weekend action continues with our special “Hogs for the Cause Gala” in our Steak and Lobster House. The Silence of Da Hams crew take over our Steakhouse with each preparing a specialty course of their own and paired with wines.

 

Prizes will also be raffled off during the multi-course dinner.  Tickets to the event are $125 per person (ages 21 and over only please) with all proceeds benefiting the Hogs for the Cause Foundation.

Following Friday evening’s dinner, we will be featuring a special seated show in our Crown Room featuring Alt-Country/Rock/Folk artist and Storyteller Todd Snider.

Day Three: Saturday, September 15th, 2018

Silence of Da Hams Crew workin’ the BBQ!

“Hogs for the Cause Courtyard BBQ!”

 

Day three of our Hogs festivities brings us outside to our own backyard or courtyard rather where our Silence of Da Hams crew along with local chefs showcase their culinary BBQ creations. Our chefs will have spent the entire night preparing several different smoked offerings along with some inventive sides.  One menu highlight will be Cochon de Lait, a NOLA favorite. Cochon de Lait is one of Acadiana’s most famous and delectable dishes – marinated, pit roasted young suckling pig thin sliced and served on a po-boy. A staple at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, this dish is not to be missed!  In addition to the good eats, there will be adult beverages (and beverages for the kiddos), live music featuring Funk/Rock/Soul sounds with local faves Jelly Bread and Smooth Live Hip-Hop/Jazz from Las Vegas’s The Lique!  Also featured is a silent auction with items generously donated from local businesses.  Admission is Free, all ages are welcome and proceeds from the food & drink sales and the silent auction all benefit the Hogs for the Cause Foundation.

“Hogs for the Cause” Caps Off in the Crown Room featuring The Dean Ween Group!

Following Saturday’s outdoor feasting, we close out our Hogs Weekend with a ticketed show in the Crown Room showcasing The Dean Ween Group (of the band Ween) and their quirky mix of Rock/Alternative/Funk and more!

 

Plus the Soul/Folk/Rock sounds of Gene Evaro Jr. will keep the party vibes flowing with their after party in the Red Room!
